Lech ski holidays - Austria
Lech Description
Lech is one of the snowy playgrounds of Europe’s rich and famous. A few have doubtless never donned a pair of ski boots but most come for the excellent skiing and the dramatic scenery. With over 260km of beautiful pistes covered with the Arlberg-Skicard it is hard to go wrong. The village also screams of alpine affluence with shops and restaurants to tempt hands into wallets.
The skiing is, as one would expect, excellent. Beginners will find plenty of blues to cruise along on close to the resort and the ski school is top notch. The Royal Family learnt to ski here so the resort must be doing something right. Intermediates will love the contrasts between the tree-lined runs down by the resort and the testing reds all the way at the top. The reliable and speedy connections to Zurs will ensure that there is plenty of variety in any one week of skiing. Experts will find the many black runs (30 of them) a welcome challenge and there are miles upon miles of off-piste powder- best explored with a guide.
Snowboarders, strangely enough for such a traditional resort, are welcomed (as long as their money is good!). There is an extensive board park and the off-piste will please any boarder who enjoys floating on champagne powder. Also included on the Arlberg-Skicard are the resorts of St. Anton, Zurs and St. Christoph.
Looking much like a stereotypical winter wonderland postcard has never hindered Lech in its 700 year life. If you like traditional wooden buildings with 3 feet of snow on them and a real alpine village atmosphere you can’t go wrong with Lech. While there are some modern developments efforts have been made to keep everything traditional and in the same style.
Zurs is slightly smaller than Lech but has the same charm and beauty as its sister village further down the valley. A bit quieter and better for families than Lech, Zurs is the ideal choice for the above the treeline Austrian holiday!
